A Backyard Space to Age in Place

MyKabin worked closely with one Seattle family to make sure their Kabin fit their vision of being a safe, comfortable and accessible home for a beloved family member to age-in-place.

Here’s their story.

A More Affordable Option for a Forever Home

Monica and Martin were looking for a place close to their home in Capitol Hill for Martin’s mother to age in place.

Their current home didn’t accommodate what she needed to be comfortable and live independently, and the cost to renovate would have been significant.

MyKabin proved to be the most cost effective option to give her the privacy, comfort and proximity to family she was looking for in a place to spend her later years.

Finding MyKabin

Monica and Martin researched a variety of Seattle-based cottage providers online and even considered hiring an architect before finding MyKabin.

“MyKabin seemed like the avenue that would make the most sense. Nothing else came together like MyKabin did; it always seemed like there was a tradeoff with other providers,” said Monica.

A Backyard Cottage that Works For Their Property

MyKabin’s configurable approach and design options allowed them more flexibility to make the Kabin fit their vision and work better for their property, like relocating the front door and choosing a kitchen layout that worked best.

“When you pick MyKabin you’re not stuck with the standard way of doing things. You can make adjustments that make it a good fit for what you want,” said Monica.

Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Monica and Martin were in close communication with the MyKabin team throughout the process and were happy that MyKabin was receptive to making the cottage more accessible for Martin’s mother.

“My mother-in-law is elderly so we needed to add some safety features that would make her feel comfortable,” explained Monica. “The MyKabin team was understanding and reasonable. They would weigh out what they could and couldn’t do in a way that seemed fair.”

“MyKabin knew where to look to find a solution, which meant that I didn’t need to do extra research myself. I’ve worked with builders in the past that would say, ‘Sure, just tell me what to do.’ I liked how MyKabin just took initiative.”

Making the Home Accessible

Some of the changes made to the Kabin to make it more accessible included lowering the kitchen cabinets, adjusting the orientation of the kitchen, and adding grab bars in the bathroom.

“My mother-in-law is happy living there. The house is very well insulated and it has all the features she needs. The MyKabin team was helpful, prompt, and kept the process moving forward given constraints with the supply chain. Janet was excellent at responding to questions and helping navigate the disability accommodations we were trying to make. The siding and woodwork looks great, and all the vendors were very respectful and professional.”

A Versatile Space Brings Value for the Future

Monica and Martin recognize the value their new backyard home adds to their property and the benefits that the versatility of the space brings.

“My mother-in-law is living there now, but in the future it could also be an au pair quarters, an artist studio, or rental space. We built something durable that can fit a lot of different needs down the road.”
